Ohio Fairness Act
What This Bill Does
SB 70 — the Ohio Fairness Act — would add sexual orientation and gender identity to Ohio's existing nondiscrimination statutes. The bill extends protections across employment, housing, and public accommodations, bringing Ohio in line with the 23 states that already have comprehensive LGBTQ+ civil rights laws. It does not create new legal categories — it simply extends the same protections already guaranteed on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age, and ancestry.
Why This Matters
Ohio is one of the few remaining states with no statewide nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ residents. While some Ohio cities have local ordinances, protections vary dramatically by zip code. SB 70 would close this patchwork gap, ensuring that no Ohioan can be fired, denied housing, or refused service simply because of who they are or whom they love.
